The Art of Combat
The Sacramento Freifechter base their curriculum on the book Gründtliche Beschreibung der Kunst des Fechtens by Joachim Meyer, first published in 1570. In 2005 the first full English translation was released by Dr. Jeffery Forgeng and rapidly sold out. It was then nearly impossible to find an affordable copy of the book for the next nine years. In 2014 Dr. Forgeng released a second printing of the book and it is once again available to people interested in learning Joachim Meyer's material. We heartily recommend you purchase a copy for yourself!
A book on modern and classical fencing, this is the go to resource for anyone who would like to better understand the complex science that is fencing. The book does an excellent job in outlining many aspects of fencing theory and training. While written for modern fencing practicioners the material is easy to use and understand in the context of Historical Fencing.
Online Resources
For those seeking additional resources on Historical Fencing we recommend that you check out the Wiktenauer. Run in cooperation with the HEMA Alliance the Wiktenauer is home to many freely available transcriptions and translations of Historical European Martial Art texts.
Adelheid Zimmermann produced high resolution remastered images of Meyer's longsword plates from his 1570. These are the cleanest available images of his material.
